Free (At Last)

I ran away from home.

I spent the next several years floating between houses, couch surfing, dropping out of school, free riding, never really staying put anywhere. Everything I owned I kept in boxes, in storage, ready to go. I had to leave almost everything behind. I'll never see my report cards, drawings, favorite books, or one full half of my family again. The price was high, but I was free. This was the context for the creation of this series.

I am proud of these pictures. It is the oldest series you'll find on this site. There are many things about these photos that I find naive, amateurish even, but I love the earnesty and honesty with which I made them. I choose to continue showing this work because I have hope for a free future. I continue to believe that human beings need to be free.
